Novigrad is a small tourist town on the west coast of Istria, at the estuary of the longest Istrian river Mirna. In the 8th century it was the centre of Carolingian rule in Istria. From the 6th to the 18th century it had its own archdiocese. Rich history of Novigrad has left the town with preserved medieval city walls, Town Hall, several churches and Gothic houses. The old town core was located on the island that was connected to mainland in the 18th century. Today, Novigrad can boast one of the cleanest seas in this part of the Mediterranean. The shore is indented and accessible, with pebble and rocky beaches. Novigrad has a long tradition of tourism. In 1845 it had the first tourist guide. Hotels Rotonda and Cittar are located right by the city walls, immediately by the sea. Hotel Emonia is close to the town harbor and marina, and hotels Maestral and Laguna are also located by the sea, some hundred meters outside of town. Tourists who prefer a different - camping vacation - can find place at the motor camp Sirena or camp Mareda located 4km north of the town. Other than hotels and motor camps, Novigrad also offers apartments and rooms in family houses. Apartment rental is a normal additional occupation for the residents of Novigrad. During the summer, guests can enjoy numerous events. Some of the better known ones are: St. Pelagije Celebration (patron saint of Novigrad), Gnam Gnam Fest (gastronomy event), Foto eX Tempore (international photography competition), Astro Party Lunasa (astronomy and mythology event), Parkfest (music festival with urban character), Arterija (visual arts festival). During one's stay in Novigrad it is certainly worth visiting Museum Lapidarium with its collection of stone monuments, liturgical furniture elements and early medieval collection. Gallery Rigo, situated in a Baroque palace with the collection of modern art, is also active under the tutelage of the Museum.
