Novigrad is a scenic historical little town located on the southern Novigrad shore under the mountain Velebit, in a long bay who's steep shores are covered with dense pine forest. Novigrad has been inhabited continously since prehistory. The oldest part of town, historical centre is located on the north-eastern side of the bay on the hill-side under the fort Fortica, surrounded by heavy walls. Roman fortress in who's foundations a Liburnian citadel is found, was reformed in the 13th century, and hence named Castrum Novum (lat.), meaning Croatian Novigrad. In that same fortress queen Elizabeta Kotromanic' and her daughter were held captive, two persons who greatly marked the history of Novigrad. The Novigrad sea is inflown through a tight channel by the river Zrmanja. That channel along with the rock which protrudes from the sea, at the very river's mouth make for a distinct scene which remains in the memories of those who visit this beautiful river. When it's turgid it offers us one of the best rafting spots in this part of Europe. And when it's calm, it becomes a beauty on which we gently drift through breathtaking landscapes. Zrmanja is rich with perfectly warm water, beautiful canyons and waterfalls. It's crystal clear waters curve through a 200m deep canyon, in which it has created travertine falls like the Veliki buk, being one of it's greates curiosities not just because of it's beauty but alse it's height of 10m.
