Susak is a unique island in the Adriatic Sea as its origin and in its appearance. Thick layers of fine yellowish sand on limestone plate inflicted ancient winds since time immemorial people around their farms planted reeds whose roots in search of water to penetrate deep into the soil and keeps it from erosion. The island is on charts appear very early, first under the Roman name Sansacus or Sansegus, which probably comes from "sampsychon" (Greek - marjoram), which will result in the Croatian name of Susak. The first mention of the island in written sources dates back to the middle of the 9th century, when they clashed in the waters near the Saracens and the Venetians.

Most of the population lives on the island of Susak after the end of II. World War II. Sixties of the last century, mass emigration to the United States. It is estimated that in America today there are more than 2,500 residents of Susak, mainly in the state of New Jersey. Since 1985, Susak is celebrated Migrants' Day on the last Sunday in July. The first settlement, whose origins date back to Roman times, was built on a fertile plain, and is called the Upper Village, and the Lower Village, located in the harbor, more recent, built in the heyday of viticulture in the late 19th century. Because of its isolation, Susak has preserved its archaic speech (protected as a cultural monument), the specific customs and colorful costumes.
