Split is the main urban, cultural and transport center of Dalmatia. Split is a 1700 year old city and is included in the UNESCO list of world heritage sites because of its numerous archaeological, historical and cultural monuments, especially Diocletian’s palace, which is the center of the city. It has all the attractiveness and wealth of a modern Mediterranean city and it lives in a slow rhythm which is very easy to get used to. The first citizen of Split was Emperor Diocletian who had the famous Diocletian’s palace built, by which we recognize the city today. Apart from the palace, there are also many other historical monuments in Split, such as the Iron Gate (this is the only gate through which life passed for 17 centuries), Golden Gate (Emperor Diocletian entered through this gate on June 1st, 305), Silver Gate (less decorated than the Golden Gate, its multilayered history was crowned by the passing of Pope Wojtila through it in his popemobile), Brass Gate (completely different from the other three gates, secured seaside escape in case of attack on the palace), Cathedral of St. Duje (cathedral is located in the oldest building in Europe - Diocletian’s mausoleum), main court (meant for appearances of Diocletian where his people would bow to him and kiss the hem of his cape), basements (the best maintained ancient complex meant for raising the level of the Emperors apartment), vestibule (empire’s foyer), Benedictine Monastery of St. Euphemia (first pre – Romanic church ever built along the walls of the palace in the 11th century), Chapel of St. Martin above the Golden Gate, late Antiquity church of St. Theodore above the Iron Gate and many other cultural monuments. Split has many wonderful beaches, of which the best known are Bačvice (sand), Žnjan (pebble), Kaštelet (pebble), Kašjuni (pebble), Bene (pebble and rock), Trstenik (pebble), Firule (sand) and Ovčice (pebble). Split has a rich cultural and entertainment offer, especially during the summer when the city’s squares, yards and other locations become a large stage under the clear sky. Culinary enthusiasts can enjoy many restaurants of which we recommend “Bota Šare” on Bačvice Beach, “Boban”, “Maslina”, “Pimpinella”, “Nevera”, “Atlantida”, “Le Monde” and “Lučica”. You can also visit “Fifa” for excellent food, social waiters and low prices. If you prefer spicier food, you can visit the Mexican restaurant “Arkada” and Asian restaurant “Crna Mačka”.
