Kupres is a town in north-western Herzegovina, located in the middle of the Kupres Plain (Kupreško polje), with more than 10,000 inhabitants. It was first mentioned in documents of Kingdom of Croatia. It is the most famous for winter tourism facilities and well-preserved nature. There are two main ski centers called Čajuša and Stožer, which are usually visited by Croats because of the low prices of food and accommodations, but also because of the closeness with the Croatian border. There are four ski slopes and four ski lifts, but Kupres is also attractive place in the spring and summer, too. The event called Harvest Days in Kupres - Strljanica is very popular among locals and tourists, and it is held at the first Sunday in May every year. The old-style grass cutters are required for this event. As far as the climate is concerned, Kupres has mountain climate and it is largely defined by the position at 1120 to 1250 meters above mean sea level. Kupres is covered in snow for at least five months a year. The average annual temperature is 5.7°C and the snow storms are very frequent. Kupres plain is a 24 kilometers long and 10 kilometers wide karstic plain located east of Livno plain and Glamoc plain, and north of Duvno plain. It is surrounded by many mountains on all sides.
